      The Recommendation

This is a great place to come to soak in the atmosphere and talk in the open courtyard over a few bottles of makgeolli and your classic makgeolli house fare. The space is large enough for medium sized groups, and the dim-lit ambiance is great for casual drinks with friends.

    • Jeondae Gamdaek in Gyeongbukgung

Down the winding alleyway near Gyeongbukgung station, passing an interesting mix of traditional market stores and much newer craft beer houses and restaurants, you will find the rather unassuming front entrance of Jeondae Gamdaek.

What lies inside is a very beautiful,  open hanok type complex. Decorated with plants, water pools containing fish in the open central courtyard, and all around busy tables attesting to this place’s recent surge in popularity. The place has a distinctly traditional feel and a great atmosphere any night of the week.

    • Food Recommendation:

      Spring vegetable Jeon  (두릅전)
      Pumpkin jeon  (호박전)
      Bossam (보쌈)

    • Drinks Recommendation:

Daedaepo 대대보 (Aspartame free & pleasantly sweet)
Geumjeongsan 금정산 (Aspartame & sour tangy flavour)
Songmyeongseob 성명섭 (Aspartame free & dry mild flavour)

    • The Food:  In keeping with the traditional atmosphere, the menu boasts some delicious Korean offerings.  What is great about this place is the seasonality of the menu, where items pop up with their freshness and availability.  All the dishes are well prepared with generous portions, and it is easy to leave feeling satisfied but not overfed.

The Sool:  The only drawback of this location is the lack of variety when it comes to the more diverse range of makgeolli.  There are quite a few makgeolli options on the menu, but only two are non-aspartame options and nothing beyond the regular ABV makgeolli or soju. If you like a certain makgeolli they offer then it’s the trifecta of food, sool and ambience, but if you are looking for other sool options you might be limited.

The Feel:  The location is situated in a bustling side alley awash with bars and restaurants.  The street itself is wortha visit, and arriving at the oasis-like interior of Jeondae Gamaek’s hanok is a welcome sool destination.  Beautifully situated wihout being overcrowded, the ambience of this place is a big drawcard.

Directions: Come out of Gyeongbukgung Station (Line 3) exit 2, and walk to the corner where there should be a Paris Baguette.  Turn left here (on the same side of the road as PB) and walk straight.  You will pass two right turns, and before you get to the third right, the bar should be on your right.  The entrance is quite small and is easy to miss, so take your time to thoroughly check the signs.
