    • Hwangeum Kongbat (황금콩밭) in Ahyeon District

Hwangeum Kongbat is in a neighborhood alley of Ahyeon-dong, just far enough away from the bustling entertainment districts of Sinchon and Hongdae. It is a refuge of authentic and heartwarming food and unique hand-made sool. With seating both in the main restaurant and private traditional rooms tucked away out back, it is a place for getting comfortable and dining to your heart’s content.

    • Food Recommendation:

      Bossam (보쌈)
      Tofu Jeon (두부전)
      Cheonggukjang (청국장)

    • Drinks Recommendation:

House Made Makgeolli (황금콩밭 막걸리) (Sour / Sharp / Citrus)
House Made Soju 42%: (황금콩밭 소주) (Strong / Clean / Fragrant / Smooth)

    • The Food:  One of the key features of this place, is the fact that they make the tofu freshly every day. Once they are sold out of tofu, sadly you are out of luck and will miss out on some of the creamiest, luscious tofu you’ve ever had in your life. But also don’t go past the cheongjukjang which is also made on site. No fear of the strong smell here, it’s all beautifully balanced and is the epitome of comfort food.

The Sool: No need to spend much time perusing the menu here, there are just two options when it comes to what to drink. The owner ferments his own makgeolli which is a very uniquely sharp and sour brew that can divide the crowd. If you’re looking for sweet, you will not find it here! But for those that want an adventure for the palate, this brew is so wonderfully paired with the food that before you know it you are asking for more. It is also a rare opportunity to try soju that has been distilled in-house and kept at the higher ABV of 42% and is crisp and clean.

The Feel:  Hwangeum Kongbat is a popular place for the locals that know just how delicious it is, so around the dinner hours it is often bustling. But the real gem is in the back rooms where you can enjoy a relaxed traditional atmosphere with the aroma of woodfire under the gamasot and the open air of a small courtyard. There are no airs or graces here, just honest hearty food and sool.

The Price: The prices here are quite reasonable and you certainly won’t be making sly eyes at portion sizes. It is perfect for a large group that would like to eat and drink merrily without burning a hole in the pocket.
